NORTHWAY MALL: ANCHORAGE, AK

Craig Evans' Commentary:

(user submitted August 26, 2019)

As a consumer to the Northway Mall for the past 20 years, it is a sad story for a mall that was once upon a time a major destination for consumers of all ages.

The number of stores that have left over the years is a major travesty to say the least. Yes some of them closed down nationwide such as Sam Goody and Suncoast, but others just decided it was time to pack up and leave. Once a great kids play place was located here, nice food places to eat at. But it seems as with each place that has left it has been really filled in with stores that are either trying to get a start in business and fail only to have the process repeated to many times. Any of the so called anchor stores that have been here and left have not ever been replaced with anything close to what was there leaving gigantic voids in the store fronts throughout the Northway mall landscape. Three store spaces have been combined into one for Planet Fitness, there are at least 6 to 7 empty retail spaces available at the time of me submitting this. With none of them even having a "for lease" sign in them to entice any new businesses to even want to come into the mall. Most have been so-called "prettied-up" with some minor decorations to make it look somewhat presentable. Not exactly the best use or way to get new business into the space if you ask me, some are being used just for storage as well.

The outside conditions of the mall are not all that attractive either, as the main entrance lights have been known to have letters from the name to be out for prolonged times, the main parking area lights go out and are not replaced for prolonged times. The numerous amounts of potholes that are in the parking lot, some far to big to not due major damage to an average persons vehicle, and if they are "repaired" they are very shoddily done. The paint of the outside building is severely out dated and has so many spots on it. Too many places patched over from graffiti to name. The main sign by the highway has been almost completely grown over with trees so that most retailers who have paid for the name to be there cannot even be seen from the road to let customers know they are even there. The list of defects for this place can go on and on and on and on.

In parting, this is a slow and silent death to a mall that was once upon it's time a major destination for customers to come and shop. Your Truly,
Depressed Mall Shopper
