ST CHARLES MALL: ST CHARLES, IL

Mike Mustard's Commentary:

Posted January 29, 2005 (user submitted)

St Charles mall was built in 1979/1980 on the West side of St. Charles IL. It's two anchors were, K-Mart and Joseph Speiss. It had the typical mall stores and a 3 screen theater. I worked at the Radio Shack in it's final days. I wish I'd taken pictures.

The mall thrived until about 1991, when crosstown "Charlestowne Mall" opened with a Sears, JC Penney, and Carson Piere Scott. St. Charles Mall closed in the Fall of 1995 and sat vacant until 2002. In it's final days, it had been vandalized several times. It became a dumping ground for tires, and other hard-to-throw-away items. One Sunday morning, I was driving through the parking lot only to find that someone had abandoned a blue 1978 Cadillac Seville right at the front door!!!

I have included pictures from 4-29-02, the day they started demolition and 5-30-02, when the mall was almost completely gone.

The land is a giant weed patch now. They have talked about a new "Auto Mall", but nothing has happened.

To add insult to injury, a new mall, "Geneva Commons" has been built ONLY 1/4 MILE AWAY!
